Super seventh for di Meglio, Smith disappointed in Valencia |
|
Dimanche, 06 Novembre 2011 16:27 |
The Tech 3 Racing Team ended the 2011 Moto2 World Championship campaign in Valencia today with contrasting fortunes for Mike di Meglio and Bradley Smith.
The 27-lap race started with light rain falling over the Ricardo Tormo Circuit, though the race was declared dry and di Meglio and Smith started on slick tyres.
The tricky conditions provided a serious test of skill and concentration as di Meglio and Smith quickly tried to gauge grip levels in the early phase of the race.
Frenchman di Meglio adopted a cautious approach in the opening 10 laps, the former 125cc World Champion gradually building up his speed and confidence as he got engaged in a typically frenetic battle that has become a feature of the ultra-competitive Moto2 category.
He eventually finished in seventh position to claim his third top 10 of the campaign, and he was less than a second away from the top five.

Rain disrupts Valencia preparations for Tech 3 Racing |
|

Rapidly changing weather conditions that have dominated the Valencia Grand Prix played a vital role again in this afternoon's Moto2 qualifying session, with Mike di Meglio and Bradley Smith set to start the final race of 2011 from ninth and 12th on the grid respectively.
The session started on a dry track but within seconds of the pitlane opening, rain spots started to fall on the tight and twisty Ricardo Tormo Circuit.
Tech 3 Racing duo di Meglio and Smith pushed hard immediately on slick tyres, aware of the need to post a decent time before forecast rain showers disrupted the session.
Both had completed just seven laps each when the heavy rain started, wetting the track sufficiently to prevent lap times being improved, even though 30 minutes of the session still remained.
Frenchman di Meglio's best lap of 1.38.496 secured him a place on the third row for his final appearance on the Mistral 610 machine.

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team and Tech 3 Racing Moto2 team extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Marco Simoncelli, who succumbed to injuries he received in this afternoon's Malaysian Grand Prix.
Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider Colin Edwards was involved in the second lap incident and he suffered a dislocated left shoulder. The American has left the Sepang International Circuit to begin his recovery at home in America and his thoughts and prayers are with Simoncelli and the Gresini Honda family.

Sixth row for di Meglio, Smith begins recovery |

Tech 3 Racing Team rider Mike di Meglio will start the Malaysian Moto2 Grand Prix from the sixth row of the grid after a closely contested qualifying session took place in scorching heat at the Sepang circuit this afternoon.
The 23-year-old ended qualifying in 17th position, the Frenchman quickly regaining his confidence after he suffered a heavy crash at the fast Turn 6 in this morning's final practice session.
The former 125cc World Champion spent most of today trying to dial out a chatter problem with his Mistral 610 machine, which prevented him from pushing closer to the top 10 in gruelling temperatures that reached an energy-sapping 33 degrees. His best time of 2.08.855 was less than 0.5s away from ninth position and he has targeted a top 10 challenge in the 19-lap race, which is the penultimate round of the 2011 World Championship.
British rider Bradley Smith was back at the Sepang International Circuit this morning to commence his battle to be fit for the final round of the season in Valencia on November 6.

Bradley Smith ruled out of Malaysian Grand Prix |

Tech 3 Racing Team rider Bradley Smith will take no further part in the Malaysian Moto2 Grand Prix weekend after a heavy fall in this morning's opening practice session at the Sepang circuit.
The British rider was one of four riders to crash after an isolated but heavy rain shower fell at Turn 10. Unfortunately for Smith, the appropriate flags warning of a completely wet track in that section were not being waved at the time, which resulted in a 15,000 Euro fine for Malaysian Grand Prix organisers.
After an initial examination in the circuit's first class medical facility, Smith was transferred to the Pusat Perubatan UKM Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur for further checks on left shoulder and chest injuries.
Doctors have ruled out internal injuries but the 20-year-old has suffered a small crack in his left collarbone.
Smith was discharged from the Pusat Perubatan UKM Medical Centre earlier this evening and he will be back at the Sepang circuit tomorrow for consultations with Clinica Mobile staff on the recovery of his damaged left collarbone.
Further information will be made available at the earliest opportunity. |
